No need to read cereal boxes with this around- the package kept us busy through breakfast. It's shade grown. Our morning hit was never so virtuous. Or tasty

Kicking Horse Coffee Reviews

One of the reasons this company did not make my recommended list of sustainable coffee providers is that they give no clue as to where they source their coffee, nor any information on who determines that their coffee is truly "shade grown" or the level of shade. This is a real problem for consumers. The governing coffee board in Costa Rica, for example, allows any farm with a few scattered trees to call it's coffee "shade coffee." It's not, and does little or nothing to preserve biodiversity.

I go into it in a series of three posts:

Shade-grown coffee certification:

Who evaluates non-certified shade coffee:

I love Kicking Horse coffee. Everything I know about its greenness I read on the package, and I'm not a great judge ast to whether there's a better product out there, but it's pretty compelling to me. Fair Trade is also in the mix so give it a bump from 4.5 to 5 for the economic benefit.

My absolute favorite coffee is Kicking Horse Coffee, which is blended and roasted in the Okanangan Valley (mid-BC) and of their coffees, they have one they call "Kick Ass coffee"....and it is!

Coffee is one of the worlds most un-eco-friendly products around. While the folks that sell Kicking Horse haven't figured out a way to grow this stuff locally I think they have nailed every other aspect. The coffee is shade grown & organic. If you love dark rich coffee then this is your best bet!
